This claim that a Mayor will use his veto power to punish
City Council is such a crock it's incredible! They claim it will take a
"super-majority of 5 Council votes" to override a veto. Yes,
it will, just like in Congress or our State Legislature.
Or, more locally, just like it takes a "super-majority of 5
Council votes" to remove a City Manager under our current charter!
Why do they support needing a "super-majority" to remove a
City Manager?
We hope you ask these supporters of
"Council-Manager Government" just why they are so afraid of
the independent oversight into their activities that a Mayor with veto
power will have? What do they have to hide?
